Command/CTRL + K isn’t the only way you should know how to add a link in WordPress.

Yes, it’s a handy shortcut, but there’s more to it than that when you’re dealing with different types of links. Want to link to another blog post? Add a sleek button in WordPress? Or maybe add an affiliate link to make a little extra cash?

Knowing the right tricks saves you time, makes things easier, and helps your site look even better.

I'll show you step-by-step why links matter, how to add different link types in WordPress, and how a WordPress link plugin makes it all easier.

You probably clicked on a link to get here, right? That simple click brought you exactly where you wanted to go. Pretty cool, huh? 😉

Links work the same way on your site. They connect one page to another, either on your blog or somewhere else on the web. They guide your readers, help with SEO, and can even earn you money through affiliate programs.

Let's say a reader is on your blog, totally hooked on your content. Maybe they’re loving your tips, drooling over your recipes, or curious about your favorite tools. But without links to guide them, they might hit a dead end — and leave.

With a link, you can lead them to your best post, favorite product, or even your Instagram page.

Links keep your audience engaged, which means more time spent on your site. Search engines also love this because it shows that you are giving readers value.

🔗 Want to add those links to WordPress without the hassle? 🪄

A WordPress link plugin like Tasty Links automates the process so you can focus on creating amazing content. No more copying and pasting links, constantly fiddling with settings or worrying about disclosures. It’s all done for you. (More on that later.)

The actual process of adding a link to your WordPress post or page is pretty simple. And the first few steps are the same whether you add an internal link in WordPress or external link.

1. Go to the post or page you want to add it to or start a new page.

Head to WordPress, login, and go to where you want to insert that clickable link.

Type your ideal text (if you're starting from scratch), or choose the text you want to turn into a link, aka the anchor text for your link.

For example, if I'm sending readers to my guide covering what affiliate links are, I'd highlight: “what affiliate links are.”

In the block toolbar above the text, click on the chain link icon (🔗).

This gives you space where you can add your link and customize it.

Here's where things change a little based on whether you add an internal link or an external link.

  • Internal Links: Search for a post or page title on your WordPress site, and select it. (See example ⬇️)
  • External Links: Paste the URL of the web page or website you want to link to.

There's an example below of those steps in a gif!

💡 Here's one more quick tip when adding a link on WordPress. When you write your anchor text, use descriptive anchor text as your link button instead of “Click here.

It’s better for readers and SEO.

Before you’re done, take a bit of time to tweak your link settings. These little changes can make a big difference for your readers and your site.

Here’s a simple chart to show you what settings work best for different types of links. And, if you want to learn more about link settings like nofollow, sponsored, and UGC? Check out my link attributes guide.

CustomizationInternal LinksExternal LinksAffiliate Links
Open in New TabOptional✅ Recommended✅ Recommended
Add rel=”nofollow”❌ Not NeededOptional✅ Needed
Add rel=”sponsored”❌ Not NeededOptional✅ Needed
Add rel=”ugc”❌ Not NeededOptional (for comments)❌ Not Needed

Some settings here are optional because they depend on your preferences and how you want people to interact with your links. For example, “Open in New Tab” is great for external links, but for internal links, it’s up to you.

At WP Tasty, we keep internal links opening in the same tab. This helps readers explore your site naturally with less hiccups.

And you know what? Link settings are even easier with Tasty Links. Choose your link settings once, and they will be saved for auto-linking from then on.

5. Click enter

Double check to make sure your link settings are the way you want them. If so, click the submit button. It's the arrow pointing towards the left. Or, click Enter/return on your keyword.

You can do this for every link you have, but doing it over and over quickly becomes a pain.

That's why I suggest automating the process. Let me show you how to add links to WordPress automatically, which will make your life so much easier.

2. Type the button text & paste your link

Use action-packed words like “Start Shopping!” or “Grab Yours Today!” to make your button irresistible.

Why? Buttons with clear, exciting text are more likely to grab attention and encourage clicks.

Then, copy and paste the URL for your link in the field below. (Just like in the image).
